Engaging emerging founders and globally minded entrepreneurs in Tokyo

3P Ventures joined the Tokyo Global Innovation Challenge, a global student entrepreneurship competition that gathers ambitious founders, investors, educators, and ecosystem leaders in Tokyo. What made it worth the day wasn't the polish of the pitches — it was watching very early founders explain tradeoffs, market realities, and implementation under real evaluation pressure, in English, on an international stage. Those are the muscles that matter far more than a clean slide.
What the keynotes got right
Masayuki Tadokoro drew on years operating at the intersection of entrepreneurship and global markets, and kept returning to a single point: execution discipline and resilience beat novelty, and the founders who win are the ones who understand real customer pain rather than chase trends.
Eric-Masanobu Matsunaga, Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, made the academic case land practically — how raw ideas become scalable ventures through structured thinking, fast experimentation, and global collaboration. Between the two, a theme held all afternoon: innovation is less about originality than about judgment, learning speed, and the ability to move inside constraints.
The signal worth funding: global from day one
We spent the rest of our time in pitch sessions and candid conversations with teams at the earliest stages — how ideas form, how assumptions get tested, how founders think about markets beyond Japan. The pattern that stood out: most teams were already thinking cross-border, in both customers and talent. That maps almost exactly to how we think about building companies in and from Japan.
Competitions like this do quiet, compounding work. They develop founder talent early and hold it to a global standard before bad habits set in — which is upstream of everything an investor does. We came away encouraged by the quality of thinking, with a handful of conversations we intend to keep, and a reminder of why we invest where we do: the most durable Japanese companies are being built by founders who were global before they were funded.
