Building Bridges from Nagoya to Austin and Beyond

TechGALA Japan (January 27–29, 2026) has become the front door to the Central Japan startup ecosystem. We skipped most of the formal tracks and spent our three days where the signal is highest — on the floor at STATION Ai, in front of founders. Not to collect pitch decks, but to pressure-test products in person and understand the real problems teams are solving across Mobility, Life Sciences, and Advanced Tech.

The deep tech that earns a second meeting

Congratulations to UnitX Inc., winner of Grand Pitch 2026. Their AI-powered visual inspection systems are a clean example of high-utility deep tech: not a demo in search of a market, but a wedge into a specific, expensive problem — quality and yield gaps on automotive and battery production lines, where a fraction of a percent of defects is a real P&L number. That is the kind of venture-ready clarity we index on.

The Austin–Nagoya corridor

The most useful conversation of the event wasn't on a stage. We spent time with Peter Kirby, Partner at ATX Venture Partners and a builder with deep roots in Austin, Texas — one of the few U.S. markets where hard tech, manufacturing, and capital sit close together. That makes it a natural landing pad for Central Japan's industrial startups, not the generic “go to Silicon Valley” answer.

We're exploring collaborations to open that door concretely — warm introductions and real market context so Japanese founders can test U.S. demand without relocating their company. Bridges only matter if someone crosses them; the work now is making the first crossings real.

Design as a moat, not a coat of paint

It was a pleasure to hear Sofya Abramchuk (CEO & Founder, Originate Institute) on her “Origin8” method and regenerative design. Her point reinforced a belief we hold quietly at 3P: when anyone can ship, human-centric design and a coherent philosophy are what make a product hard to copy. Design isn't the finish — increasingly, it's the moat.

We left with a short list of teams that show the operator's mindset we prioritize, and a sharper conviction: the best Japanese deep tech no longer has to choose between staying local and going global. With the right corridors — Nagoya to Austin, and beyond — it can do both. Thanks to the organizers and founders for three days of high-signal conversation. We're already working the follow-ups.
